Sunny Sunday newsletter

Have you been keeping in touch with Ironman World Champs today? Both our Nelson competitors were doing well at noon, with Alan Bryson (pictured) about two thirds of the way through the 180km bike leg and Louise Corbett at halfway. The tracking is pretty sophisticated these days – easy to spend the whole day watching the race unfold.

Nelson Tri Club website

If you’ve checked out our website since Friday, you’ll find it looks quite different. Harrison Dean has been working on the new site and has now handed it over to us. There’s still some work to do to bring it completely up to date. Janice Coyle has been doing quite a bit of work to update events and we’ll be adding more recent news in the next couple of days. In the meantime – it’s got the basics and it looks good. Non-Facebook users will find they can still keep up with the frequent Facebook updates directly from the new site. Check it all out at www.nelsontriclub.co.nz

Membership and events

Unless you’ve recently renewed, your membership is going to run out soon. You can join or renew by clicking the Membership tab on the new website.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll get a 20 percent discount on all our events. You can start by entering the Port Nelson Sea Swims (November 9) and the Clements Endurance Swim Series (December 3), followed by entering Race One of our summer triathlon series (November 12).
(In the last newsletter I inadvertently had the swim start down for December 9 – it’s definitely November 9)

You’ll find links to these entry sites on the Events page of our new website.

Young triathletes

Britta Martin has been working hard on getting a youth programme up and running, with regular short races starting on Monday nights in November. All our races will have distances suitable for teenagers and novices of all ages, starting with the November 12 race.

Sea Swims

With the Port Nelson Series only 25 days away, it’s time to start gathering up our volunteers. Without this special band, the series wouldn’t be possible, but it often happens that the most dedicated volunteers get leaned on more than we’d like. We particularly need more paddlers. We put six ride-on kayaks in the water every Thursday night for eighteen weeks and we could use a few more volunteers to help spread the load. The kayaks are all right there – all you need to do is come and paddle for 45 minutes or so. If you can help with this task, offer medical support, help with registration and time keeping or any other task, please email us at info@nelsontriclub.co.nz.

Other events

The December 10 triathlon will be on a super-sprint format. That means three triathlons in a row, with no break. Each will be over distances of 200m swim, 4km bike, 1km run. Individuals will keep repeating until they’ve covered all three triathlons. There will be the opportunity for teams to enter too – either in a team tag format, where each member does a full triathlon before tagging the next team member, or as a team of one swimmer, one cyclist and one runner, where each team member just performs their specialist discipline three times. The possibilities are endless. Entries aren’t open yet, but talk to your friends and start making a plan now.
