What a day!
In Wellington, Nelson swimmers took away 14 medals in the Capital Classic, race three of the Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series. That included two gold medals for Luke Kelly (pictured), overall winner and winner of M20-24, a bronze medal for Sierra Thomas for third woman (and ninth overall in the race) and a gold for first in F12-15 and a gold medal for Terry Bone, who also made it into the top ten and won M45-49. Three swimmers in the top ten is not at all bad.
In Corsair Bay, Christchurch, Hayden Squance was the overall winner of the national Olympic distance triathlon championships, coming out of the 1500m swim in a group of three, drawing away in a group of two on the undulating 40km bike ride, then dominating the 10k run for a clear victory. As well, Wayne Leighton took bronze in M55-59 and Juliet Wiseman also scored a bronze in F60-64.
On Saturday, Kerry Mathieson was third woman to finish, winning her 40-49 age group in the Ruby Swim in Wanaka, while Rebecca Hollingsworth swam the 10k swim before jetting up to Wellington for the Capital Classic the next day.
